Ex-cop Cam Stokes knows gangs. His explosive novel takes you inside an outlaw motorcycle gang, the Devils M.C.

Gang prospect Rotten craves respect and power. He wants his patch so badly he'll do anything for it. But before he's accepted, Rotten must prove himself to the gang.

Rotten's got problems. The cops are on his tail. He's struggling to control his violent temper, and his growing reliance on P is threatening to ruin everything.

And all this is happening, here, now.

The Devils Are Here was released in September 2008 and spent four weeks in the top five for New Zealand fiction.

ABOUT US

I'm Cam Stokes, the author of The Devils Are Here, a novel about a New Zealand motorcycle gang. I'm the director of Drugscene, a drug education company that specialises in methamphetamine.

I was a cop for 18 years (1985 to 2003) including 12 years as a detective. I worked at Henderson, Auckland Central and Otahuhu on various squads including the Drug Squad, the Organised Crime Unit and the Criminal Intelligence Section. My last position was detective sergeant in charge of the Auckland Motorcycle Gang Unit. I’ve specialised in the gang field since 1987.

Gangs cause wide-spread harm in our communities. Wherever there are gangs, there are victims. Gang members are involved in a wide range of crimes but drug dealing and violence are their core business. Gangs dominate our methamphetamine market - currently estimated to be worth from $750 million to $1.5 billion per year and they maintain their position at the top of our underworld by violence, threats and intimidation. It’s no exaggeration to say that many of our worst criminals are gang members.

New Zealand has a population of just over 4 million people which includes about 3000 gang members. We’ve got about 20 outlaw motorcycle gangs and as well as “ethnic” gangs (such as the Black Power and the Mongrel Mob) whose members are predominately Maori or Polynesian.

I left the police with a vast amount of knowledge about gangs and rather than let this go to waste I put this site together to provide you with factual information about the New Zealand gangscene.

DISCLAIMER

Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of information contained on this site. If you find any inaccuracies or anything causing concern please contact me.

Most gangs take exception to being called a “gang” and prefer to use the name “club”. On this site, the words "gang" and "club" mean the same thing.

Criminal gangs are in every country in the world in some form or another. Please don’t be put off by any of the information on this website! New Zealand is a brilliant country that is safe to visit.
