And all this is happening, here, now.

TIMELINE

This shows New Zealand gang incidents which were reported in the local news media. It's very much the tip of the iceberg. Many gang arrests aren’t reported in the media and many gang crimes aren’t reported to the police, because victims are too scared.

It shows offences committed by gang members. The phrase “gang associate” is a wide-ranging law enforcement term for people who are linked to a gang in some way. Politicians often use the words “gang members and their associates” when quoting statistics about the number of gang prosecutions. An “associate” usually refers to a person who is connected through crime but it can also include those who are connected through friends and family, cars or motorbikes, legitimate business interests, sport and social or other interests.

Gangs say that the police often claim people are “gang associates” when they have no actual gang connection, or when the link to the gang is unrelated to the alleged offending. On this site I’ve stuck to what gang members have done. Offending by associates isn’t included unless it’s for a serious offence committed in the presence of a gang member. It should be stressed that “associates” do much of a gang’s dirty-work and they couldn’t survive without them.

The police media policy is generally not to name gangs involved in incidents because it may attract people to them. I don’t agree with this at all and think the police should make more of their successes. The Aussies do a much better job and have a press release all set to go every time they arrest a gang member. Why not tell the public what they are getting up to?

This section is a work in progress and I will update it monthly.
